Why We Do What We Do at Armory Baseball & Softball

ree

At Armory Baseball & Softball, our mission is simple: We build hitters who can perform at the next level, college, pro, and beyond. And to do that, we’ve designed our entire program around three foundational principles: attention to detail, decision-making, and commitment.

1. Why 45-Minute Lessons Instead of 30

We’ve chosen to offer 45-minute sessions, not 30 minutes, and here’s why: In a 30-minute slot, you’re already racing the clock. We end up cramming drills, mechanics, and feedback into a short window. That leads to shallow learning, rushed swings, and players who leave still thinking about what they should have done. With 45 minutes, you get:

  • Time to properly warm up and get into the “hitter’s mode” (posture, vision, load).

  • Focused drills that really go into detail.

  • Application time- where the athlete actually uses what they just learned in a live-pitch or machine swing environment.

  • Feedback and adjustments built into the session. We want your final swings different from the first ones, not just more of the same. In short: 30 minutes is too short for players to truly absorb and apply what we’re teaching. If they don’t apply the skills immediately, retention drops. With 45 minutes we give them the time to learn → apply → adapt, which accelerates their progress and increases confidence at the plate.

2. Why We Prioritize Strike-Zone Awareness & Swing Decisions

Elite hitting isn’t just about the mechanics, it’s the choices you make at the plate. That’s why strike-zone awareness and swing decision-making are non-negotiables in our training. Here’s what we know:

  • You can have elite mechanics, but if you swing at breaking balls in the dirt, or let damage pitches go by, you’ll never have consistent success.

  • College coaches and pro scouts don’t just look at how you swing, they look when you swing and what you swing at. Are you aggressive at good pitches in the zone? Are you disciplined when out of it?

  • Good swing decisions lead to measurable metrics: higher walk rates, fewer strikeouts, lower “swing-and-miss in-zone” percentages, and higher exit velocities. Put those together and you’re far more likely to succeed at all levels. So in every drill, every session, we build the foundation of “What pitch? What zone? What swing?” before we even talk about mechanics of the swing. Because without that decision-making base, mechanics don't matter.

3. Why We Offer Packages Instead of Single Lessons

Another key part of our model: we don’t sell single lessons, we sell lesson packages. Here’s the reasoning:

  • A single lesson can feel like a one-off. The player comes in, gets some work in, but then disappears until the next time. There’s no consistency; no momentum.

  • With one bags-on-the-wall session, retention is weak and players often stay stuck repeating the same patterns, never progressing their game.

  • When you commit to a package, we can build a progression plan. We assess where you are now, map out where you want to go, and schedule the right sequence of sessions to get you there.

  • Each package is individualized to the player’s skill level, goals, and schedule, but it ensures consistency, structure, and accountability. In short: we believe packages aren’t just for business, they’re for your success. We set you up with the best path to move forward, not just “another lesson.”
